£300.00

Dates Available:

  • 2 -4 October 2024 (Weds, Thurs & Fri)

3 day course: 10am - 4pm

During this insightful course you will explore how a limited colour palette can provide all the colour you could need for mixing a full range of representational accurate skin tones for portraiture.

During the course, we will cover the following:

  • Exploring the Zorn Palette, invented by 20th Century Swedish master figurative painter Anders Zorn

  • Creating a colour chart of all the possible skin colours and tones you could need

  • How to mix accurate skin tones, avoiding overcomplicated or “muddy” mixes

  • How to build up the portrait from the initial under drawing, blocking in the flesh tones, how to model facial features and ultimately create a likeness

  • Edges and brushes strokes; where soft and hard edges work best

  • How to work from photographs in a loose and painterly way

This course is suitable for painters with some experience in working in oils and portraiture.

Working from excellent photographic images (or you can work from your own preferred images) this course provides plenty of 1-1 instruction from Peter, as well as informal group critiques and discussions, all helping to increase your knowledge and enjoyment of portraiture and working with limited colour palettes.

Over the 3 days, artists can expect to produce at least 1 painted head-and-shoulders portraits and a working skin colour chart and limited colour palette colour-wheel.

All paints and sundries are provided for this course (we will be using artist quality Michael Harding oils), as well as portrait images, although painters are welcome to bring their own materials if they prefer.

What to bring:

  • A selection of paint brushes in a good range of sizes from 0 - 12, suitable for oil painting.

  • Your own photographic portrait reference if you wish to work from your own images (although excellent images are provided). If bringing your own images please can be printed out no smaller than A4 or you can work from a digital tablet such as an iPad.

"Peter has a wonderful way of making everyone feel relaxed. His teaching style is broken down into bite sized chunks enabling each stage of the process to be understood clearly, especially for beginners. His own work is an inspiration."

“I have never done a portrait class before but l was soon put at ease by Peter. I really enjoyed the way Peter taught in stages and encouraged us at every opportunity. Need to work on my Art but now l know where to go for a great tutor.”

This course will take place at Hogshaw Farm in North Buckinghamshire, in the Eco Centre, above their farm shop and cafe. You will be able to access the cafe during the breaks or you can bring your own food and refreshments.
